Helen & Charlotte Etc.

Still unwell with the same lurgi as Ian but I haven’t posted in days so I will offer a couple of random thoughts.First, having seen Charlotte Rampling in “Sous le Sable” and Helen Mirren in “Prime Suspect 6” this week, it is my contention that both actresses in their late 50’s have more sex-appeal in their little fingers than a busload of Britney Spears or Kylies or Beyonces.Secondly, of all the American expressions that have recently found a place in the Australian vernacular, the cruelest, most demeaning and inhumane has to be the repulsively smug term “loser”. Thirdly, please American friends, keep Mr Bush at home and remove him from office as soon as possible. The “reductio ad absurdam” of his administration’s policies would see only a very rich group of people left, inhabiting a wasteland. He seems to me to be capable of making the world of Samuel Beckett a reality.

Too right about your sex-appeal comment. There's too much in-your-face tits 'n arse grinding which is supposed to pass for sensuality and appeal these days. Pretty girls with good bodies they may be, but that's where it stops: no mystique, no aura of sensuality, no real personality in fact, which though does nicely for many of their fans, I think leaves an equal amount of people wistful for something less commerical.Mr and Mrs Bush are a-visiting the UK at the moment, and its a little distressing to see the visual fanfare and warm welcome the Royal family are giving them. But I suppose that just proves your point.

You bet your bippy I'll be voting against him come the next election, but I fear it will do little good. I only pray enough people wake up in time.

I'm worried that it's a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. I hate the thought of what 8 years of right wing fools at the helm will do but I worry that if people don't get up to their noses in the mud the Followers of the Hateful will be able to blame the continuing morass on everyone but themselves and get away with it. People too often refuse to admit they were wrong until it's painfully obvious.

Even if a more intelligent administration got in, would it have the strenghth to resist the powerful lobbies and power-cliques in Washington? It seem to me that while we concentrate on the undoubted folly of the administration we tend to overlook another vital factor, military competence. It's all very well having the equipment to blow every sucker off the planet, but you need some competent people in charge. Korea, Vietnam, Somalia, Afghanistan and now Iraq give little confidence that the Pentagon knows how to conduct a protracted military campaign, much less set up a functioning democracy in its wake. Saddam, Osama and Omar are going to require something more effective than " hit, run, fumble, oops, ouch, let's get outta here !"

Wasn't Prime Suspect 6 a stunning screenplay as well?

It was a real return to form for the series. No 1 was excellent; No 2 a real disappointment (there was much fiddling with, and attempted censorship of this episode, apparently) ; No3 was for my money the best of the series (about a tragic drag-queen); then it was downhill all the way until the recent entry. Though the scipts of 2, 4 and 5 disapponted, Helen Mirren hardly ever does. It was a bit crass not to give Ms La Plante some sort of a credit though.

I have to admit that 6 is the first one I've seen. I'm hooked enough that I just went and bought Russel the DVD Box Set of the series from Amazon.co.uk. I'll be going back and viewing them all - will let you know what I think!
