Advertising subtext
I’m amazed at the apparent subtexts of some commecials. The new MacDonald’s ad has a smarmy Mom who is flogging the new”less fatty, more healthy’ menu. She says:”I used to come here for the kids. Now I come here for lunch!” To me the subtext seems to scream”I have no control over my kids diet, so I’ll just look after myself”and the sub-subtext is,” I’m happy to feed my Kids unhealthy crap, but now they’ve come up with something I can eat without going into cholesterol-shock”, The lies that tell the truth.

now if only they'd do something about all these effing kids....hey there!
Hi guys, I know that feeling, but even after 25 years of elementary teaching, I still have a soft spot for the little boogers. It was pushy parents and smug prissy teachers I couldn't stand.
ahahahaha! when i read this i was guiltily tucking into a mcdonalds vegeburger (one of their "healthy new menu choices). i am not a big fan of mcdonalds....but living with three boys, on junk food nights, i ALWAYS lose the vote!! they looooove it. i can tell you right now, the "healthy" vegeburger tastes just as bad as the other crap they serve up!i agree with you about the advertising. it never is what it seems to be.
Poor old McDonald's - jumping on the band-wagon late as usual. Just as the rest of the world is realising that fat is not, and never was the issue. The burgers actually aren't so bad, it's the other crap that's the problem: Regular Coke = 40g sugar Large Milk Shake = 152g sugar Strawberry Sundae = 47g sugar
hey Bill, I heard you joined LJ--welcome aboard!I'm a McDo junkie, so have to abstain from this one.
In America, they've started using the same music for the McDonald's commercials as they use for the Mercedes car commercials. It's trying to send the message that suddenly McDonald's has become much more posh than previously, though we all know it's still the same shithole it always was.
amazing and disturbing at the same time but so many are led so easily. it is pretty revolting to me.oh and welcome to LJ
yep no matter how damn obnoxious a child is I find that it is the idiots raising them that are GUILTY!when I rule the world or remake the universe it will require more than the proper genatalia to procreate. Maybe 5 years of schooling or a certain number of tests to pass or something besides two minutes of friction in the right places.
BTW welcome aboard the good ship LJ. I managed to find a new colour combination for your entries that I liked and could read, but its getting harder.Re: Maccas, I think the element to control is its marketing to children, until that is controled, fat will still reign triumphant, and the problem is that, firstly, it is successfully marketed to children. Two, they REALLY do want to eat the crap, and three, modern parents more often than not seem to take the line of least resistance and pander to their children.I like your analysis of the sub and sub-sub texts.
It takes more fluid out of you to digest a soda than is IN the soda. The sugar content disturbs me also. I went off sugared beverages a while back and now I cannot drink them at all anymore. The sweetness is just incredible. Drink up yopu poor beleagered children! Gah.Oh and McDonalds recently announced an upscale restaurant in New Orleans. Is that non fast food? Are they trying to change?Of course I eschew television, so commercials are a venality denied to me. I fear television.
A Mc Do junkie? Well obviously your sins haven't found you out........YET!
Hi Ket: I'm not without sin on the eat/exercise roundabout but I am somewhat proected from Macca degeneracy by the fact that , to me, it tastes like crap.
Hi Connor: Sadly, the lowest common denominator seems to be temporarily triumphant in cuisine and politics.
Thanks David. I think "First, let's kill all the lawyers", should be replaced with"First let's firebomb all the advertising agencies".
Hi Dave: It's a scary topic for a diabetic with a sweet-tooth. As for TV, for me its like a deadly snake, dangerous but fascinating.
I concur. Plus, most of the cashiers/salespeople are rather surly. Even the "healthy" menu is nast. :)
Bravo! you're going to go on my Christmas/seasonal greetings card list. :)
