IR...

I’ve been missing from lj for a few days because I’ve been feeling very ordinary and about as alert as the first summer blowflies (blowies) , which have begun to appear with the first heat. They are immensely slow and stupid and irritating if you are trying to take a nap. You are faced with the prospect of poison , squashed blowfly or chasing them physically out of the house. While I’ve been hors de combat, I,ve been exposed to more than the usual amount of television. It reduces everything to the same value: an atrocity in Africa is given the same weight and excitement value as a new snack.Trying to stay informed without becoming depressed can be difficult. Sometimes I like turning the programmes into a continuous opera, with basso-profundo arias for right-wing politicians and counter-tenor ariettas for soft-drink and snack-foods. Appearances by Arnold Schwarzenegger have severely strained my heldentenor. I was very moved by my rendition for John Ashcroft and Osama Bin Laden of the duet from “I Purtitani” There is also an extended coluratura aria for Prime Minister before parliament, The words are a bit repetetive and drained of meaning, but the florid decoration of the vocal line seems to thrill the nation. The words go: “Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Speaker....(variously).I am a bit worried about the large cracks in the walls of our old house. They are making me feel a bit Edgar Alan Poe. For now though, hiking the mortgage enough to do much about it is out of the questiont. I may have to change my name to Roderick.

cracks in the walls eh?there were lots of cracks in the walls here too. something to do with the clay subsoil which expands and contracts all the time. hard to avoid the cracks in this area.i don't like watching news or newspapers because i get very depressed about what i see. not only the news itself, but the way it is presented as entertainment. awful.the weather is glorious i think. i've been planting so much in our garden. lots of marigolds and lobelia........heaps of different veggies and herbs. pleasant.same as the last four springs i'm saying to myself "we really do need fly screens on the windows and doors" but i know we won't put them in. especially not now we are gearing up to sell.fly screens will be essential in the intrinsic design of our country abode. there are lots of flies buzzing around the cows up there!!hope you feel even better very soon. xx

Good to hear from you. I can't watch television. I started feeling embarrassed watching it and the feeling grew until it was just too uncomfortable to endure. There are far better reasons to blush than that.I think it's wonderful that there's so much spontaneous singing in your house. And before I forget, which Roderick?

Which Roderick? (reply should be given between a sigh and a whisper) Why......sigh,,,,,gasp...Rod-(gasp)-erick Usher. The only other Roderick I know of is Roderick Random, the forgotten hero of a forgotten book. Only someone as formidably well read as you might have read that one. I certainly haven'tThere is an awful lot of embarrassing stuff on television, but once or twice a week there is something wonderful on, I did think American television particularly awful when I was there. Ours is more like a cross between US and British TV, so it's not all televangelists, Jerry Springer and marketing. David Attenborough does his bit to redeem the medium.

Poe may be a bit hysterical and his language is as much manic as Mandarin, but I like him. I read him when I was sixteeen and he was such a relief from the stuff my pretentious school was setting as texts. I think the set book for that year was Galsworthy's "Man of Property". You can imagine how that one set my sixteen year-old pulse a-throbbing.
